PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A former Pensacola doctor will avoid prison time in his deadly illegal pill mill case.

William Wilson was charged in 2021 with racketeering, drug trafficking, fraud, unlawful use of a two-way communication device and culpable negligence inflicting personal injury.

The Bruni family provided WEAR News with court documents showing the sentencing for this former doctor. They say they never suspected their son would fall victim to their once family doctor.

Tristan Bruni was 17 years old when he experienced a bad accident that would lead to more than a dozen surgeries within the next 18 months.

"Two tracheotomies, two feeding tubes, bone removed from hips, vascular surgery removed from his arm put into his face, so that was 15 surgeries," Tristan's mother Barbara Bruni said. "So he was on and off again of opioids."

"He was not a drug addict," she said.

In April 2018, after undergoing extensive operations, Tristan began seeing Dr. Wilson at the Wilson Family Medical Center in Pensacola. The Bruni's knew Wilson well.

"He knew Bill because Bill had been our family doctor for many years when the kids were small," said Barbara.

"Knew them for years, same street," Tristan's father Jack Bruni said "...I considered him a friend."

Not long after Tristan began seeing Dr. Wilson, his mother says he received an unusually abnormal prescription. It would be his last.

"The prescription this time went from oxycodone to include Xanax and Ambien," Barbara said. "...And the very next day, he just didn't wake up and we found him."

"With losing your son, it's like you lose everything from day one... the baby images, all of it and then it's all gone then and there," said Jack.

Barbara and Jack Bruni say the investigation into the Wilson's began with their son's death.

In 2021, WEAR News was there when charges were announced against Dr. Wilson, his wife Beverly and son James. Both were facing similar charges.

Investigators say Dr. Wilson's office billed insurance companies for over $1.8 million and received over $500,000.

On Friday, the Bruni's were there for Dr. Wilson's sentencing after he pleaded guilty in Escambia County court. They're less than pleased with the reported sentence.

"His sentencing was $5,000. 5K for our son's life? No..." Barbara said. "He took the plea that was allowed for him to take from the state and that's what they did."

This sentencing agreement shows Wilson agreed to plead guilty to six charges that carry a maximum sentence of 126 years.

The Bruni's say, in addition to a small fine, Wilson will spend ten years on probation. As of Monday, they say it's not what they hoped for. But they have come to terms with the outcome.

"If nothing else, Tristan's death this is how I see it. He stopped Bill Wilson and his wife, and his son Jimmy. Shook him. They didn't think they would get caught," said Barbara. "They were a freight train out of control and Tristan shut them down. So that's what gives us a little more peace."

On Tuesday, Beverly and James Wilson will appear in Escambia County court. WEAR News was told they have not accepted a plea deal with the state.
