Join Deb in embodying the Divine Feminine with your #InnerGoddessTeam! This week we’re celebrating the revered Inuit goddess of the sea, Sedna. She reminds us to tap into our fierce power when we feel like we’ve been victimized, and to ask for support and nurturing to heal.

Sedna’s mythology is rich and varied. In one version, she starts off as a beautiful young woman whose father is set on marrying her off. When a seabird promises Her a soft life in a warm hut full of bearskins and fish, she flies away with him. She discovers his home is actually a filthy nest and begs her father to come take her home in his kayak. When they try to escape, all the seabirds create a terrible storm and to keep the boat from capsizing, she is thrown overboard. When she grabs the side of the kayak and tries to climb back in, her father chops off all of fingers.

Finally, the girl sinks into the bottom of the sea and becomes Sedna, the goddess who controls all sea beasts and is half-woman and half-fish. The Inuit believe that she holds sea animals entangled in her hair, only to release them when she is appeased by offerings, songs or a visit from an angakok (shaman). The angakok may visit Sedna in a trance, where he transforms into a fish and hears of all the ways her people have disrespected her. He then soothes her by combing her hair with a bone comb and massaging the tension out of Her aching muscles since, fingerless, She is unable to.

So, you can call on Sedna when you need courage to dive into the deep shadow places within your psyche to face your fears and anger, then to request and ask for healing from the Divine.

Questions to ask yourself: How have the painful incidents in your life taught you about your own Divine nature? What foolish mistakes (like Sedna flying off with the bird) have you made that you need to forgive yourself for and move on?

Patricia Telesco offers a playful way to draw Sedna’s blessing to you: “get a goldfish and name it after Her! Each time you feed the fish you’re symbolically giving an offering to the Goddess. When you have a need, whisper it to the fish so Sedna hears you.” (from her “365 Goddess: a daily guide to the magic and inspiration of the goddess”.)

I mentioned a wonderful artist, Matt Maes, who inspired me to explore Sedna, and who is creating a powerful Goddess series of paintings. Definitely check out is website at: https://www.quantumkeyholestudio.com/

And this is the chant I shared, my favorite to invoke goddesses of the sea:

I am the Ocean and the Ocean is me.
I am the Goddess and I am the Sea.
Everything opens when I open me.
Everything opens when I open me.
