How to Achieve Immortality | Miguel De Unamuno’s The Tragic Sense of Life

When we reflect upon our inevitable death, it’s possible that some of us wish that our soul will continue to exist. This might make death less intimidating, however, the immortality of the soul. is difficult to justify rationally. The philosopher Miguel de Unamuno even attacks some attempts to rationally justify the immortality of the soul.

However, this irrationality does not stop Unamuno from his belief in the immortality of the soul. He believes our desire to sustain ourselves is the basis of all knowledge, and he even discusses ways in which we may try and obtain a “pseudo” immortality. When we desire to be remembered by others we try to go after this “pseudo” immortality, but this is only a “shadow of immortality” to Unamuno.

With this desire for immortality, and the acceptance that the immortality of the soul is irrational, what must we do? Unamuno radically decides to rebel against this rationality and chooses to believe in the immortality of the soul.
