FRUITA, COLORADO – Mountain Biking Moore Fun East to West. Riding the Yeti SB100 with the Crashing Dad on Fruita’s most technical trail! This is part 1 of a savage “out and back” ride. Most notably, Moore Fun is a crucial “Stage” in the Outdoor Gold Enduro, a rigorous circuit of handpicked trails where I try the capabilities of bikes in a review assessment. Moore Fun’s technical climbing and slow speed descending make this the most important and relevant stage in the test.

Technically we’re in Loma, Colorado, but who cares how close the DOT weigh station is, we are here to mountain bike a legendary trail that sees very few visitors. Moore Fun carries a stigma, that its just too hard to ride and that no one should ever even think of attempting this trail. That double black diamond banner flies high on Moore Fun, but I’ll let you in on secret, cleaning all the moves on Moore Fun will require upper end fitness and double black diamond talent. However, the majority of the trail rides as a black diamond if you know what you are doing.

As one of the least visited trails in the Kokopelli, Moore Fun had received a large spotlight from Nate Hills, its probably busier than its ever been. On packed weekends, I find Moore Fun to be a great place of solitude still to this day, with a few riders. MF is like the western slope equivalent of lower Bitterbrush in Lyons, except even harder! At the beginning, let not your heart be troubled, some techy climbs will keep a lot of the riff raff off this trail.

Sheyn and I will ride Moore Fun, the route it was originally intended to be ridden, East to West. The lines here make the most sense and the trail is more rideable versus the opposite direction. That said, this version is the sketchiest with very creative alternative lines that maximize the pucker factor.

The climbs in this route are all very achievable, though a double black effort is required. In, fact the climb in this route is the highlight of your day here, you wont get a more involved climb on any other trail. There no paint so you must keep you head up and decipher which way to go. The lack of trail in parts can get a bit confusing. Sessioning moves is practically required to clean the features on the first ride. You’re reward? The best views in the Kokopelli.

The Descent ain’t no picnic. Its rowdy and unpredictable. Riding too fast will lead you off the trail or worse, over the bars. Actually an OTB is not a matter of if, but when. Stay cautious and aware of the lines and alternative lines. A couple of these moves will require an advanced rolling tech experiences and trials moves are required to clean the whole thing.

In Troy Rarick’s book Fruita – Grand Junction Fat Tire Guidebook the 7th Sacred Edition, he calls the trail “all rideable, but rarely all ridden” and that’s a fact. I personally have yet to master the trail though Moore Fun has mastered me!
