Mountain Biking Hawkeye Trail, Fruita Colorado Part II

Part II: Hawkeye is the newest trail in Fruita, Colorado, April 2017, located in the western end of the Kokopelli trail system. You can find the main trail head right off the Mack exit on I-70. Look at 2.9 miles, one way, with 650 ft. of climbing and descending for an “out and back”. We’ll be looking at this trail ridden downhill from Mack Ridge. The downhill ride is very intermediate with some low end black diamond rock options that can be more challenging when mixed with rider confidence and speed. However, be aware that people do use this as a climb and there can be moderate traffic.

This is Part 2 from a trail mashup with Part 1, West Mack Ridge. The goal is to showcase a real trail combination that is a legitimate ride option. Some trails are good standalones while others need a little help by combining other pieces. Hawkeye, taken as an “out and back” is pretty short, that’s why we added Mack Ridge to the mix.

There are many ways to ride Hawkeye. When in doubt, take the “out and back”, which has been most popular way, or use it in combination with either the East Mack Ridge or West Mack to Troy built or Lions. All the trails on the Western half of the Fruita Kokopelli Trails can be ridden in any direction. If you aren’t interested in riding Hawkeye downhill, the climb is worth the effort to lead you to the other options.

Seasons: Like most everything else in Western Colorado, target the spring, early morning summer and the fall. Trails like Hawkeye will clear of snow and mud on average in early March depending on the flow of winter (can open up as early as Valentine’s day). Temps can vary from day to day. In the summer months expect many gnats in late May to early July also becoming very hot until mid September. Fall features some more prime time with no bugs and great temps. These trails won’t ride at all when muddy and be completely impassable, but they do dry very quick.
