Dunboy Castle - County Cork Ireland

Описание к видео Dunboy Castle - County Cork Ireland

Dunboy Castle (Caisleán Dhún Baoi) is located on the Beara Peninsula in south-west Ireland. It was the main fortress of the O'Sullivans, who controlled the area until the early 17th century.

After the Irish defeat at Kinsale in 1601, Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare continued to resist English rule in Munster. Sir George Carew, Lord President of the province, was determined to destroy Dunboy Castle, the main stronghold of the rebellion. In 1602, Carew landed his heavy guns and about 4,000 men on Bere Island, across the harbor from Dunboy. The castle was defended by only a small garrison of 140 men and the castle wall was breached by Carew's cannons within hours.

The Irish forces defending Dunboy surrendered but were all executed and the castle was destroyed on June 22, 1602.

A star-shaped outline visible on the site marks a Cromwellian fort built towards the end of 17th century.
