After the rumors kept on coming for over a decade, Killer Instinct 3 was finally confirmed. It got many upgrades though to compete with other beat em ups. The game was released as a non-full price title with a tiny roster and kept adding new characters over 3 seasons. Ultimates weren't originally part of the game (only Shadow Jago had one) and they were added later, but not every character got one which is unfortunate. All characters of the previous Killer Instinct games are included with new and imo mostly improved designs. They also have their classic costumes.
There are several new characters which fit well into the crazy roster, like a mummy, a ghost, a vampire and such. The music is AWESOME (Mick Gordon in Season 1 & 2, who you might know from the current Doom games) and dynamic, changing during battle. Ultra combos now play a melody. Even selecting menu options plays the KI main theme!
Special moves have been improved since Killer Instinct 2 and are flashier. Like other beat em ups, characters can activate a comeback-mechanic, called Instinct, which e.g. makes characters faster, combos easier, adds new moves.
The whole game has been made easier to play for beginners.

00 Jago (blue ninja, now throws the world's largest fireball)
44 Saberwulf (werewulf, they removed his mechanical arms from KI2... hm, which is better?)
31 Glacius (ice alien, I don't like his new design so I chose the classic one)
14 Chief Thunder (a skin more accurate to his tribe was added later added for free, that's nice!)
00 Shadow Jago (new, similar moves but eeevil, first character who had an Ultimate)
48 Sadira (new, spider-ish assassin, to me the least interesting new character but nice stage)
33 Orchid (woman with glowing sticks, has her cat back, doesn't have an Ultimate which is sad)
58 Spinal (skeleton, now even more pirate themed... and I find him hilarious)
29 Fulgore (killer robot, fires a huge laser with really cool sound design, stole Cinder's Ultra?)

Season 2:
17 TJ Combo (boxer, his Ultra looks amazing, and his Ultimate is satisfying too)
17 Maya (tribal woman, she's a ranged fighter this time)
09 Kan-Ra (new, an evil mummy using sand attacks... of course he does!)
05 Riptor (dinosaur, AWESOME cyber-redesign, actually kills classic Riptor in her story mode)
03 Omen (new, demon minion with music and design foreshadowing the return of Gargos)
32 Aganos (new, a mechanical golem, his theme "Polemos" is my favorite in the game)
47 Hisako (new, a creepy The Ring like ghost girl complete with spooky jumpscares)
05 Cinder (a poser made of fire, his old design looks way cooler though with improved graphics)
38 Aria (new, angel-like robot leader of Ultra-Tech and final boss of season 2)

Season 3:
00 Kilgore (new, a DLC to fund a tournament, looks like a proto-Fulgore, but plays differently)
00 Eagle (new, Thunder's... brother?)
31 Kim-Wu (red-haired woman with nun-chucks, can summon dragon spirits)
05 Tusk (had a Barbarian theme in KI2, now reminds me of Beowulf)
00 Arbiter (new, guest-character from Halo, has a smooth voice)
51 Rash (new, guest-character from Battletoads, which is a meme from 2006...)
25 Shin Hisako (new, all beat em ups need a "shin" character. Sadly, no Ultimate.)
00 Mira (new, a vampire attacking with grey blood... so basically PG13 Skarlet from MK.)
48 General Raam (new, guest-character from Gears of War. He's going in for the Kryll!)
19 Gargos (gargoyle, absolutely badass re-design, final boss of season 3... no Ultimate. Why!)
12 Eyedol (two headed ogre, very interesting mechanics, epic remix of his theme)

Sometimes it seems like the framerate is going down (e.g. during Shin Hisako's Ultra), but after several recordings I figured out it was added on purpose, probably to get the melody right.
