When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!




In this video I show you how I use my sketchbook to experiment and prepare for a finished piece. By breaking down this challenging image using simple rules of perspective, and adding washes of watercolour layer by layer, we can produce something fun and enjoyable without the stress!

The reference features 3 point perspective, meaning there are 3 different vanishing points to consider. Being aware of this, and some simple measuring using our pen means we can easily get our sketch to be accurate. And with the basic shapes laid down we can play a little with the perspective to highlight different features.

Simple colours and focussing on values across the image lets us then bring life and fun to the finished sketch.

For me, this piece is my first 'warm up' for a commission - and my friend, who asked me to do this, has kindly given me permission to film the process and pop it up for you.
