What does a full day exploring Boa Vista really feel like? Let us take you with us.
Our journey begins in the colorful streets of Sal Rei, the island’s laid-back capital. As the town slowly wakes up, we leave the pastel houses behind and follow the coastal road south, where the Atlantic stretches endlessly beside us.
Our first stop appears quietly against the blue horizon — the small white Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima. Sitting peacefully by the sea, it’s the perfect introduction to the island: simple, beautiful, and deeply connected to its traditions. The waves crash below as we take in the views and capture our first photos of the day.
Driving north along the wild coastline, the scenery becomes more dramatic. Then suddenly, rising from the sand like a forgotten monument, we reach the legendary Cabo Santa Maria Shipwreck. Stranded here since 1968, the rusted cargo ship tells a silent story of the Atlantic’s power. With the wind whipping across the beach, it’s impossible not to feel small beside it.
Leaving the coast behind, we head inland toward the golden waves of the Viana Desert. The landscape transforms into rolling dunes that look like a slice of the Sahara dropped into the middle of the ocean. Here, it’s all about freedom — climbing the soft sand, taking panoramic photos, or even trying a bit of sandboarding.
Back toward the southwest coast, the ocean reappears at Praia de Chaves. Long, untouched sands stretch into the distance where dunes melt into turquoise water. It’s peaceful, raw, and beautifully unspoiled.
From there, we step into local life in Rabil, one of the island’s oldest settlements. Away from the resorts, traditional pottery workshops and quiet streets offer a glimpse into everyday Boa Vista. You can feel the island’s heritage here.
Continuing south, we arrive in Povoação Velha, the oldest village on the island. Colorful houses, friendly faces, and a relaxed café stop make this the perfect place to pause for lunch and soak in the authentic Cape Verdean atmosphere.
But Boa Vista saves some of its most breathtaking scenery for later. The road opens up to reveal the spectacular Praia de Santa Mónica — 18 kilometers of untouched white sand. Often called one of the most beautiful beaches in Cape Verde, it feels endless and completely wild.
Just when you think the views can’t get better, the cliffs of Varandinha come into sight. Sea caves carved into the rock, dramatic drop-offs, and sweeping ocean views create the perfect final stop before we begin our journey back north.
As the sun lowers and we return to Sal Rei, the full island loop feels complete — beaches, desert, villages, history, and adventure all in one unforgettable day.
