We love making movie trope survival guides here on NowThis Nerd, and we’ve decided to kick off our new series with one simple question: What could go wrong? And to start, we’re covering one of the most intriguing sci-fi concepts of all: Time travel. Travelling through time can be hazardous to your health, but with our time travel survival guide, you’ll have every advantage when you plunge headfirst into the timestream. There’s plenty to look out for if you want to keep yourself, not to mention the universe, intact, whether it’s an impossible paradox or the dreaded time police, messing with the past is a great way to endanger the future. The time travel rules seem simple enough, but when it comes to the cosmos, things are never as simple as they seem. From Star Trek to superheroes, it’s one of the most established tropes in all of scifi, but even with all the time travel content out there, people still insist on getting into their time machine and screwing things up for the rest of us. The laws of physics don’t care if you’re a Starfleet officer or a crazy old man in a DeLorean. Just like Marty McFly, if you don’t follow the rules, you’re out of luck and out of time.

Time travel features in everything from the Back to the Future trilogy, Back to the Future, Back to the Future Part II, and Back to the Future Part III, Doctor Who, Looper, Futurama, BTTF, Rick and Morty, Timecop, Primer, The Butterfly Effect, and the Simpsons, who’s legendary Treehouse of Horror V Episode Time and Punishment is one of the best examples of the butterfly effect concept. But not matter what fictional universe you’re in, you’re better be well aware of the rules involved with time travel. You don’t want to wind up with a grandfather paradox on your hands, or run afoul of the Doctor Who Reapers or Stephen King Langoliers. Honestly, if you want to do it right, you should take a page from the brilliance of Bill and Ted. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is one of the smartest movies ever made about time travel, and if you want to take advantage of a causal loop, ace your homework assignment, or be excellent to each other and party on, you should follow their lead, or our guide on what could go wrong with TIme Travel.
