In 2018, the idea of super soldiers is still far from reality, but in the world of sci-fi, it’s one of the most enduring science fiction tropes out there. From Spartan heroes to space marines to everything in between, the best super soldiers are paragons of virtue who defend their nation with pride, they’re heroes like Chris Evans Captain America, super soldier and Captain America The First Avenger, or Sebastian Stan Bucky Barnes, Winter Soldier, Wolverine Logan Weapon X, X-23, Wade Wilson Deadpool, and outside of the MCU Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men, superheroes, and other comics based comic book movies, there are plenty of other scifi super soldiers like Robocop, Master Chief, and other super soldiers who are upstanding examples of the trope and would gladly have your back during Avengers Infinity War.

But for every super soldier who works out, there are plenty more who don’t. The worst super soldiers range from genocidal maniacs like Kefka Palazzo and Sephiroth, monsters like the Abomination and the Incredible Hulk, or world conquerors like Star Trek Khan Noonien Singh, the tyrant who debuted in the classic Star Trek TOS episode Space Seed and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. You could make entire movie lists out of Super Soldiers that turned into deadly supervillains instead of a superhero. Villains like these are pretty cut and dry examples of why it’s a terrible idea to make super soldiers, yet the trope is still appealing to evil corporations, corrupt governments, and sci-fi worlds everywhere.
