Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) was a Czech composer who represented the Romantic music of the late 19th century, and his works strongly reflect the musical characteristics of the Slavic peoples. Dvořák was deeply influenced by the folk music of Bohemia and incorporated its rhythms and melodies into his own works. The diversity and depth of emotion in his “Slavonic Dances” are particularly striking. While he utilizes the rhythms and characteristics of folk dances, he composes his own melodies and sublimates them into a classical music form. The Slavonic Dances No. 1, Op. 46, originally written in 1878 for piano solo, was arranged for orchestra by Dvořák himself, and became even more popular in that form. The second piece in particular is known for its structure, which combines a mournful melody with dance-like rhythms, and reflects strongly Slavic folk sentiments.

Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) has created an expressive arrangement that preserves the emotion of the original while making full use of the violin's technical skills. He added a new dimension to the work, which is now also performed as a solo piece for violin. In his arrangement, the violin plays the melody as if it were singing, sometimes in lively dance rhythms. The arrangement is a technical challenge for the violinist, but at the same time, the audience is offered the opportunity to rediscover the charm of Dvořák's Slavonic Dances.

Through his interaction with Brahms (1833-1897), Dvořák was inspired by his “Hungarian Dances” to compose the “Slavonic Dances. Brahms appreciated Dvořák's talent and supported him, introducing him to the German music publisher Simrock. This made Dvořák's works widely known and established his international reputation.
