Interview with Julia Retz, June, 2024

Artist Julia Retz (Campinas, São Paulo, 1987) discusses her interdisciplinary work, which spans visual arts, furniture design, and interior architecture, influenced by her architectural background and critical perspective on modern Brazilian architecture. She critiques the authoritarian nature of architectural practices that marginalize diverse experiences, advocating for rethinking space organization. Retz explores flexible materials like rubber to symbolize tension and adaptability in architecture, contrasting with rigid monumental forms. Inspired by Céline Condorelli's "support structures," she views furniture as supportive, adaptable, and integral to various activities, blending practicality with a deep connection to the human body and its needs.

Julia Retz is part of Salta art's 2024 program and will be undertaking a residency at Ebenböckhaus, Munich from 7 October to 20 December, 2024.
