Black Myth: Wukong is a 2024 action role-playing game developed and published by Game Science. The game is inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West and follows an anthropomorphic monkey based on the character of Sun Wukong from the novel.
Black Myth: Wukong made its debut on PlayStation 5 and Windows on August 20, 2024, with an Xbox Series X/S version in the pipeline. The game has been met with resounding acclaim from critics and players alike. In just three days, it had already sold a staggering 10 million units, solidifying its place as one of the fastest-selling games in history.
Black Myth: Wukong is not just another action role-playing game . It's a unique blend of action and soul-like elements, offering a thrilling single-player experience from a third-person perspective. Inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West, it promises a gameplay experience like no other.
The player controls a monkey protagonist, the Destined One, based on Sun Wukong from the novel. The protagonist's weapon is a staff based on the Ruyi Jingu Bang from the novel. The staff can extend and shrink in size during combat. The three staff stances, which are the smash stance, the pillar stance, and the thrust stance, provide versatility in fights. The combat mechanics involve resource management. Focus can be accumulated by landing light attacks, executing well-timed dodges, and other means. A focus point is gained when the meter for focus is filled up. These points can initiate a varied combo, chained to light attacks, or charge a heavy attack on its own. Stamina depletes by sprinting, dodging, and attacking.
Spells have cooldowns and consume mana. They are categorized into mysticism, alteration, strand, and transformations. The protagonist uses transformations to shapeshift into a different creature or being. An example is the transformation of Red Tides, which takes the form of Guangzhi, a wolfman who wields a flaming glaive. The transformations come with their own movesets and health. They are available on cooldown but do not cost mana. They last until their might is depleted by attack or health runs out.
Spirits provide a skill and passive effect if they are equipped. Spirit skills function as transformations to do a single attack. They are available on cooldown and consume qi. Spirits come from certain defeated enemies and are acquired if absorbed into a gourd. An example of a spirit is the Wandering Wight, who does a headbutt attack.
Black Myth: Wukong unfolds in a richly detailed world, offering a primarily linear progression interspersed with expansive areas. As the protagonist navigates this world, they encounter various yaoguai as enemies, adding an element of surprise and challenge. While the game's difficulty may not remain constant, the thrill of exploration and discovery is a constant companion.
Black Myth: Wukong is told throughout six chapters and features multiple endings. In the story, the Destined One begins his journey to retrieve lost relics. The game introduces cultural and natural landmarks from the real world into its setting. It features, for example, several locations from Shanxi Province, such as the Yungang Grottoes, Little Western Paradise, Nanchan Temple, Iron Buddha Temple, Guangsheng Temple, and Stork Tower, as well as locations from other provinces, such as the Kaiyuan Temple in Fujian Province.
Black Myth: Wukong is a game developed and published by Game Science. The decision to make a single-player game was made on February 25, 2018. The development team moved from Shenzhen to Hangzhou in December 2018. They considered the cost of research and development to be high from the start of the project, so they did not have high expectations for profitability initially. Nevertheless, they wanted to create a single-player game in their own style, focusing on traditional cultural themes. They discussed themes such as xianxia and wuxia but were most enthusiastic about the Journey to the West. The team chose to use Unreal Engine 4 and familiarized themselves with it at the level for Huaguo Mountain, which briefly appeared in the announcement trailer before they put work on it down and started on the level for Black Wind Mountain.
