Find your correct RATE OF DESCENT (ROD)!

You will know what the rate of descent is, how to calculate the rate of descent in order to maintain a 3 degrees descent angle and at the end, we will look at an approach chart and get the information regarding the rod of that procedure.

The rate of descent is expressed in feet per minute, so, if you are losing 1000 feet every minute, for example, you have a rate of descent of 1000ft/min.

Let's say you are cruising at 10000feet and, you want to land at an airport with no elevation, it will take you 10 minutes to land if you keep a rate of descent of 1000ft/min.

You need to be very precise on maintaining a correct rate of descent during the last part of your procedure because at that point you cannot ask for delay vectors to lose the altitude in excess.

The vast majority of the approach procedures have a descending angle of three degrees, so what you need to know is what is the vertical speed required to maintain a three degrees descent.

If you take your Ground Speed and divide it by 2 and add a zero you will get the rate of descent required to maintain a three deg descent.

For example, if you have a Ground Speed of 100kt you will be required to maintain a vertical speed of 500ft/min to descend on three degrees descend angle.

By using this method you will know what rate of descent you need to maintain when your Ground Speed changes throughout the approach.
