Hersheypark is kind of a magical place for me. If they call Disney World the happiest place on Earth, then Hershey is known as the sweetest place on Earth. I grew up about an hour away as a kid, and some of my earliest theme park memories are here, from the factory tour dark ride to going upside down for the first time on SooperDooperLooper. And amazingly enough, one of the things still going strong in 2025 is the Overlook Arcade. Sitting in the shadow of the park's iconic Kissing Tower, this massive fun center on the top floor of their food court is filled with hundreds of games from different eras. Yes, of course, like any other place they have ticket games and claw machines galore. There's no disputing that. It's an amusement park, what would you expect? What keeps me coming back here though is that they have a solid lineup of video game and pinball classics from the 70's, 80's, and 90's that you'd be hard-pressed to find at any other theme park in the States these days.
First off, let's talk about their retro cabinets. There's some must-have standards here for sure. Of course you can find Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, and Street Fighter II at a lot of places. But when's the last time you went to an amusement park and saw a Real Ghostbusters cab? Or WWF Superstars? Heck, they have Dragon's Lair up and running! Those classic laserdisc games from the 80's aren't easy to maintain, and this one has been here for ages.
Second of all, we can't forget Sega's presence here. They made some of the most memorable, unforgettable games throughout the Eighties, Nineties, and early 2000's with unique cabinets, and they've got so many of them out on the floor here. The oldest one I saw out on the floor was Super Hang-On, a 1987 motorcycle racing game where you would ride on an actual (albeit tiny) motorbike. This is an obvious spiritual predecessor of the Super Bikes series that's everywhere in major arcades these days. They also had a Shinobi cabinet along with the other retro cabs, but the unique environmental cabs are even more eyecatching. Jurassic Park: The Lost World! King of Route 66! WaveRunner! Star Wars Trilogy! Top Skater! Any one of these would be noteworthy, but all six of them in close proximity? Amazing. And I can't NOT mention the fact that they've got a four-player linked version of Daytona USA 2 here, one of my all-time favorite racing games! And that's smack dab between Super Hang-On and Super GT, another rare title!
Last but not least, let's talk about the pinball. They've got six machines, plus a pitch-and-bat game alongside it. There's a few Sterns such as Star Trek and Monopoly. Then things start getting weirder. Bally's Fireball Classic? Chicago Coin's Hi-Score Pool? Gottlieb's Ice Fever? This might be the ONLY place I've ever seen Ice Fever, which is a shame, because it's a heck of a lot of fun. And I can't leave out the literal elephant in the room; Atari's Hercules, a gigantic monster of a pin that uses a skee-ball as its pinball! With less than 500 of these ever made, it's rare to find them -- yet somehow, this isn't the only amusement park I know of with one!
Now, I can't lie -- while for me this is still the best arcade you'll find at any amusement park, it does definitely seem to be losing more and more of the older games every year. Since my last visit in 2024, I no longer see some of the retro games like Mr. Do, Final Lap, 1942, Karate Champ, Double Dragon, so on and so forth. The Star Wars pinball machine from last year has been moved over to the park's other arcade, Playdome, but Comet appears to be completely gone. And while I was updating the listing on Zenius, I counted 21 games removed since last year, with 10 of them being retro games. Hopefully they're just off the floor for repair and renovation and not removed entirely, but it is concerning. They DID add a Pac-Man's Arcade Party machine which has multiple classic games in it, but that's no substitute for the real things. I hope Hersheypark's management realizes what a gem they have on their hands and preserves this arcade for years to come!
