PhD viva experience from start to the end
The journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step. I recall my first encounter with some Petri dishes containing nutrient media and fluffy-looking structures (Fungi).

Then I was lucky to conduct my B.Sc thesis on isolating microflora from African yam beans seeds (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) stored under different storage conditions. Isolating the different fungi based on their morphology and colour serves as the foundation that triggered my curiosity in Scientific research.

Fast forward to many years later, I spent the last ~5 years investigating the biology of the rice blast fungus using high-resolution live-cell imaging. And I enjoyed every moment of my research.

Last week, I successfully defended my PhD research thesis and looking back at the journey so far, there are many lessons, but I will summarise them into two;
1. Enjoy every moment and don't compare your speed with others
2. Be proactive about your development, collaboration and seek counsel when in doubt

Having a conducive environment is essential and take a break whenever you can. I am thankful that I have supportive family, colleagues and supervisor.

Here is a highlight from my PhD viva celebration with colleagues
