Alix is personally and professionally committed to challenging the structural barriers women face in sport coaching. Alix has been participating in sport as both an athlete and a coach for most of her life. She was a multi-sport athlete growing up, eventually deciding to play volleyball at the post-secondary level. As a student-athlete Alix published an article titled Police record checks: Athlete protection or political smokescreen? setting her on an academic conquest to figure out what motivates sport coaches. Admittedly, Alix was always skeptical of coaches and it was not until she started coaching herself that she learned how difficult it was to coach. The once student-athlete transitioned to a student-coach, coaching and pursing her passion for academics. For the last five years Alix has been researching and publishing on various topics linked to the powerful sport coach figure. At the heart of her work, is her personal mission, which is to use courage, compassion, and connection in order to build a sport community where everyone is empowered to become the best version of themselves. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
