"Strictly Bulleid II" after party | 35006 & 34072 in service on the Swanage Railway 14&17/06/2024

Carrying on the Bulleid spam. "Strictly Bulleid II" may have passed, but there would still be plenty of Bulleid action on the Swanage Railway, as 35006 and 34072 would see action over SR metals.

The "Strictly Bulleid II" Gala, held over the weekend of June 7th-9th, saw the largest gathering of working Bulleid pacifics since 1967 descend on the Isle of Purbeck and the Swanage Railway. After the event, 35006 "Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co." would work regular services for a further 5 days, before being relieved by 34072 "257 Squadron", giving enthusiasts a further chance to catch the pair powering through the Isle of Purbeck.

Normally based at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, 35006's visit to the Swanage Railway would be only its second time visiting another heritage railway in its preservation service. It would also mark the first time in 21 years that a 'Merchant Navy' Class has worked regular services on the Dorset branch line. On the other hand, 34072 is a previous resident of the Swanage Railway having been based on the line between 1990-2022. The Bulleid pacific, owned by Southern Locomotives Ltd, left the railway in late 2022 upon the return to steam of 34070 "Manston", taking up residency on the Spa Valley Railway. The return of 34072 to its former home has been greatly anticipated, and comes as a very welcome sight to many on the SR.
