Meet BLACK WALNUT: Wild Flavorful Nut & Anti-fungal Remedy

Black Walnut, scientifically called Juglans nigra of the Juglandaceae family, gives flavorful walnuts; as well as strong anti-fungal medicine. Learn to ID, harvest, and use this grand Native American nut tree.

Harvest & Use
The nut meat inside the hard black walnut shell is food and can be used like regular walnuts, but keep in mind that the flavor is stronger.

The green outer hull is used topically for fungal skin issues. I typically make an herbal infused oil with the fresh green hull and then combine it with a touch of tea tree oil into a salve for fungal skin issues. Yes, you can use the hulls internally for other issues, but that is for another lesson.

Gather nuts as they fall off the tree. You can eat the nuts right away, store them in their hull, or remove the hull, and then cure them (best flavor option).

To make medicine, use the fresh outer green hull.

Processing note: the juice of the green hulls will stain your skin and clothes, even burn your skin. Best to wear gloves.

Habitat
Anthropogenic sites; meadows, fields, wetland edges. Full sun to part sun in rich, well drained soil. USDA Hardiness Zones 4–9. Range: Native of Eastern and Central regions of North America. Now growing in parts of Europe.
