Keane performs "Somewhere Only We Know"

Oh, simple thing. In this private performance at Boston’s House of Blues, Keane boils down their 2004 hit “Somewhere Only We Know” to the simplest things: hand percussion, acoustic guitar, Tom Chaplin’s soaring vocals, and the band’s signature piano backbone, wrought by Tim Rice-Oxley, who composed the song in 2001.

If anything, this makes the nostalgia of “Somewhere Only We Know” even more piercing. There is a tangible longing in Tom’s delivery of the lyrics, a sort of desperate grasping at something he knows he can’t have again, which evokes the empathy of anyone who has ever returned to a favorite childhood haunt only to find the forest replaced by a shopping mall or the playground reconstructed in rubbers and plastics.

“Somewhere Only We Know” was the opening track on Keane’s debut album, Hopes and Fears, which the English piano rock group released in 2004. The song ranked in the Billboard Adult Top 40 in America and topped charts all over the UK and New Zealand.
