Keane performs "Silenced By the Night"

English piano rock group Keane performs “Silenced by the Night” for an exclusive group of River listeners at the Boston House of Blues. The track was the lead single off their fourth studio album, “Strangeland,” released in 2012.

“Strangeland,” according to pianist and songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley, aimed to reach back across the band’s career to re-capture the sound and feel of their 2004 debut “Hopes and Fears.” While the album succeeded in this, Keane’s performance at the Boston House of Blues really peels back all the extras layered on in the studio version of the song, leaving a song that is somehow more pure and unadulterated.

Tim’s twinkling piano composition takes the spotlight it deserves. Vocal harmonies, buried in the studio version, rise to the surface. Singer Tom Chaplin proves that you don’t need auto-tune to achieve precision of melody as he ruminates on the dark patches of life and the light that surely shines at the end.
