STORYLINE:

Hundreds of Bosnian Serb students demonstrated in the Bosnian town of Banja Luka on Monday, protesting against Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Demonstrators chanted "Kosovo is Serbia", and threw rocks at the US consulate building in the city.

After the police pushed back the demonstrators they moved towards the German and French consulates.

Dozens of police were injured during the demonstration, witnesses said.

Bosnian Serbs strongly oppose the secession of Kosovo from neighbouring Serbia, their traditional ally.

Some Bosnian Serb politicians in the past warned that if Kosovo secedes, Republika Srpska might do the same and initiate a campaign for its secession from Bosnia.

Meanwhile, in Belgrade groups of protesters stoned the Turkish Embassy and a nearby McDonald's restaurant in a repeat of Sunday's rioting, when Kosovo's declaration sparked angry protests in several cities and clashes with riot police that left about 50 people injured.

On Monday evening police could be seen taking a firmer hand with protesters, detaining some and searching others in preventative measures.

Earlier, in a separate protest several thousand university students marched through the centre of Belgrade to oppose an independent Kosovo with banners reading "It (Kosovo) Will Be Ours."

Kosovo, which was the heartland of Serbia's medieval state, has been run by the United Nations and NATO since 1999 when NATO bombing halted a Serb security force crackdown against separatists and ended Belgrade's rule there.

Serbia's president and prime minister on Sunday rejected Kosovo's independence declaration as invalid, vowing to retake the territory one day.

Belgrade leaders also said Serbia would seek to keep control over the Serb-populated parts of Kosovo, a move that would likely lead to a de-facto ethnic division.
