Located in the county of Kent, and around 60 miles east of Greater London, is the town of Broadstairs.

Historically the town's name was 'Bradstow', deriving from the 'broad stairs' carved in the chalk cliff that led from the sands to the 12th century shrine of St Mary. For several centuries it was little more than a fishing hamlet.

In 1785 Pierremont Hall was built (featured just after the 20-minute mark). Initially it was a private residence and was once a favoured holiday home for Princess Victoria prior to becoming queen. Today it operates as a venue for weddings, parties and other events.

By the mid 19th century, Broadstairs had begun to grow as a seaside resort. One of its most notable regular guests was Charles Dickens, who visited from 1837 until 1859, and wrote a number of novels here including David Copperfield. One of the characters in David Copperfield is Betsey Trotwood, who was based on a real life resident of Broadstairs named Mary Pearson Strong, whose former home is now the Dickens House Museum.

In 1863 the railway arrived in Broadstairs. This brought about further growth in the town as visitors from London were able to make day trips. Today the station is situated on the Chatham Main Line. Trains to central London typically take around two hours, although high speed services can reach St Pancras station in around 80 minutes.

Famous people from Broadstairs include Ted Heath, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1974.
