Maria was born in 1924 in Lodz, Poland. Her father died following a brutal beating from an SS officer early in the war. In 1940 she moved into the Warsaw Ghetto with her mother and older sister.

By 1941 Maria's non-Jewish aunt organised Christian papers for the family and assisted them to move into a flat on the Aryan side of Warsaw. Soon after, an uncle and his family joined them. The situation became dangerous, so Maria's aunt took them into her house in a village 16km from Warsaw. The Germans searched the house several times but did not find them. While in hiding, Maria fell in love with Julian, and they married after the war.
