STORYLINE:
Notes placed into crevices between the ancient stones of the Western Wall in Jerusalem were removed on Sunday ahead of the Jewish new year festival, Rosh Hashanah.

Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch said the notes were "full of tears."

"Tears of bereaved families, tears of wounded, tears of people who were hurt, people who were evacuated from their homes," he explained.

The notes are cleared out twice a year, before the Jewish new year and ahead of the Passover festival in spring.

According to The Western Wall Heritage Foundation, tens of thousands of notes are cleared during each operation.
