Whilst no one knows exactly how many benne (butter) dosae eateries exist in Davanagere, some say over a hundred and fifty, also earning for this city, the moniker, ‘Benne Nagari’, most would agree that it is Sri Guru Kottureshwara Butter Dosa Hotel that seems to have put this scrumptious, fluffy, butter-laden, wood-fire roasted popular offering on the world map. Located strategically in a neighbourhood teeming with medical and engineering colleges, it was only a matter of time before the students for whom the dosae served here was daily sustenance, passed out and went across India and all over the globe evangelising the delicious virtues of the fare on offer at Sri Guru Kottureshwara. On a recent ‘gourmet on the road’ expedition, I stopped by this iconic 37-year-old eatery to meet the family and explore what makes the Davanegere Benne Dosae “world famous”!
