In this video lecture we have described the definition of periodontal ligament which is defined as the “soft connective tissue that is present between the cementum and the alveolar bone”. The PDL fibers they connect the tooth with the alveolar bone. The term Sharpey’s Fibers is also described which is an embedded portion of the PDL with in the bone or cementum.
We have also described the functions of the periodontal ligaments such as supportive function, sensory function, and regulation of mineralization.
There are numerous cells present in the PDL space these cells are fibroblasts, epithelial cells, bone, cementum cells and undifferentiated cells.
