In some areas, human activities have reduced the population of insects by 75%. In his talk, Dave analyzes the causes of this insect wipe out, describes the probable catastrophic consequences of the total extinction of insects and recommends actions to improve its diversity.

V niektorých oblastiach za posledných 30 rokov vpylvom ľudských aktivít ubudlo až 75% hmyzu. Dave vo svojom talku analyzuje príčiny tohto úbytku, popisuje pravdepodobné katastrofické súvislosti spojené s úplným vyhynutím hmyzu a odporúča konkrétne zmeny, ktoré pomôžu jeho diverziu zachovať alebo obnoviť. Professor Dave Goulson grew up in rural Shropshire, UK, where he developed an early obsession with wildlife. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Oxford University, followed by a doctorate on butterfly ecology at Oxford Brookes University. Subsequently, he lectured in biology for 11 years at the University of Southampton, and it was here that he began to study bumblebees in earnest. He has published 300 scientific articles on the ecology and conservation of bumblebees and other insects and is author to a numerous books, including the Sunday Times bestseller A Sting in the Tale, a popular science book about bumble bees now translated into ten languages. Dave founded the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and was given many awards for his work. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the BBC Wildlife Magazine listed him as the eighth most influential person in conservation.

Profesor Dave Goulson vyrástol vo vidieckom prostredí v oblasti Shropshire vo Veľkej Británií, kde si už v mladom veku vytvoril vášeň k prírode. Bakalárske štúdium biológie absolvoval na Oxford University a pokračoval doktorátom na tému ekológie motýľov na Oxford Brookes University. Následne prednášal 11 rokov biológiu na University of Southampton, kde sa začal vážnejšie venovať štúdiu čmeliakov. Vydal tri stovky vedeckých článkov o ekológií a ochrane čmeliakov a iných druhov hmyzu a je autorom viacerých kníh, medzi nimi aj bestseleru “A Sting in the Tale” popularizujúceho čmeliaky, ktorý bol preložený do desiatich jazykov. Dave založil fond na ochranu čmeliakov Bumblebee Conservation Trust a za svoju prácu získal viacero významných ocenení. Bol zvolený za člena kráľovskej spoločnosti Royal Society of Edinburgh a časopis BBC Wildlife ho označil za ôsmeho navplyvnejšieho človeka v ochrane prírody.
