The question asked was if it is necessary to have a guru and a guru mantra in one’s life
Om Swami says that he does not think that it is necessary to have a guru or a guru mantra, because, there comes a stage in one’s life when the inner voice becomes the guru. A person just needs to have good sense and do good deeds. The inspiration for it can be anyone- a guru, their own parents, society, teacher or even their own self. A real and truthful guru’s responsibility is to give the highest ideals possible to his student, and after that, it is the responsibility of the student to walk the path slowly. The person who has pure good sense does not require a guru. He says, all the great religious heads did not have much influence of a guru in their lives. Those who have been the best of the best like Buddha, Mahavir, and Guru Nanak did not spend their whole life with their gurus and there is not much mention of their guru. So, it's more important that a person walking on this path has deep conviction, regularity, faith, and good sense.
Om Swami says, no one wants to explore as it needs a lot of courage. Most people don’t want to think on their own but want to just do as told. This does not lead to spiritual progression. He says that if followed properly, the most beneficial thing of going to a guru is the diminishing of one’s ego. If not observed properly the ego can get inflated too. But if one thinks of his guru as guru, and has an attitude of surrender, then their ego will diminish over time and that will lead them to have great spiritual progression.
