Zapu, a 75-year-old NNC Central Executive member from Kigwema, recounted his experiences with the NNC, which he joined at 16 in 1965. He spoke about the first group that visited China in 1966, led by General Thinoselie M Keyho and Thuingaleng Muivah, then General Secretary of the NNC. After spending 5-6 months in the Mon-Konkay area, they crossed the border into China in 1967, where they underwent 10 months of training and interacted with the Chinese Army. Zapu revealed that 130 troops made the journey to China, and their return to Nagaland took 63 days.
