News of the incident set off panic among Shia Muslims who worried that sectarian violence had now reached America. Dr. Shabir Ally says that regardless of motive, this case has sparked a discussion among Sunnis and Shias about sectarian violence. He says sectarian violence is worse than the existence of sectarianism itself, and he takes Sunnis to task for taking the law into their own hands. He says the differences between Shia and Sunni Muslims aren't irreconcilable; if Sunni and Shia scholars look carefully at the early history and evolution of Islamic thought over the first couple of centuries, they can come to a common understanding of how that history unfolded and how factions arose.
