Red Wing Shoes Boot Care - Shoe Shine Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response

Founded and still manufactured in Red Wing MN, Red Wing Shoes offer many styles of boots and other footwear that's rugged, stylish, and beautifully hand-crafted.

I recently was doing a little remodeling and demolition while wearing my Iron Ranger boots (style 8111/8115). Granted, the Iron Ranger is more of a dress boot, but regardless of that fact, they got a little dusted up and dirty.

Since the Iron Rangers look so fabulous when all shined up, I figured it was the perfect time to bring them back to life.

Though Red Wing boots last a lifetime, it's important to give them the proper care they deserve. This means either taking them to get cleaned up and shined by a professional - or by following the instruction on the official Red Wing site (here), and expending the energy yourself. A little elbow grease every once in a while will serve you well - as most things done by yourself create a more satisfied sense of accomplishment.

For the Iron Rangers - an oiled leather boot - I followed the steps below to get the most out of your footwear. When doing boot restoration, make sure to remove the laces first!


1 - Start off by removing dust and dirt from the boot. I chose to use a dry cloth BEFORE a horsehair brush, just in case there were any fragments that could cause damage to the boot.

2 - Use a stiff bristle, or horsehair brush to clear off any remaining dust

3 - Gently apply a leather conditioner (I used Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam). Allow a few minutes for conditioner to soak into the leather (some people even use a hair drier to REALLY allow the conditioner to go to work).

4 - Remove any excess conditioner with a rag. Using a leather conditioner or cleaner will remove the oils of the boot.

5 - Apply (or re-add) oil to the boots. I used Red Wing Shoes Boot Oil, but you can also use Mink Oil. It really doesn't take much oil to put on a rag, in order to shine up the entire boot.

6 - (optional). Re-add an additional layer of protection, such as Red Wing Leather Protector.


The entire process takes between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on how long you want to let the conditioner dry. Once finished, enjoy the good work you put in, and be sure to take care of your footwear often, in order to better preserve your boots.
