💙 WHAT IS A PROJECT BIRD? 💙
A “project bird” is a bird deemed unadoptable, unwanted and untrainable/unmanageable. It must have something that makes it so that the owner/rescue cannot work with it.
My GOAL with project birds is to work with birds that NEED my help - whether they’re privately owned birds or living in a rescue, sanctuary or foster home until they can be adopted out. I want to work with the “unadoptable” the “untrainable” the… “bird no one wants and that wants no one” and make them not only adoptable, but lovable. I want to show the world their value. No bird is too old. It’s never too late.
Past project birds have stemmed from numerous circumstances; Rasta the alexandrine we met while filming our TV Series One Day Miracles. His fear and aggression was so severe that it was beyond the training capacity of his 10 year old owner. I took Rasta on for a summer and returned him indoor flight and trick trained, crate trained and willingly stepping up, eating healthy food, talking and loving baths (all things he hated prior). While working with a Freeflight student, my husband saw her blue fronted amazon parrot who HATED men and was severely obese. Dave brought Storm home to work with him but of course, I couldn’t help myself and I trained him in 45 days to eat a healthy diet and outdoor free flight trained him. We also taught him to like men. Most recently I worked with a handicapped Camelot macaw named Morgan who belonged to a friend of mine. Prior to finding a forever home with my friend, Morgan was passed from home to home because of her foot deformity that she was hatched with due to improper breeding. I trained Morgan in 4 months time, you can view her transformation here; https://www.youtube.com/user/BirdTric...
I have NEVER charged anyone for my time in training a project bird. I have also never charged for food, boarding, transportation, toys, etc… this is why I have only been able to do project birds very rarely.
Because the word is spreading about these project birds and the work I do with them, I’m getting more requests to work with more birds. As much as I want to be able to take on project birds more often, I’m not in a financial position to be constantly doing so. That is, not without the help of my patrons over at www.patreon.com/birdtricks. Because of my patrons, I am able to take on project birds more often which makes my heart so happy.
To take on Lefty OR Touché it will cost me $1,580 for three months of providing toys, pellets, fresh food, transporting to/from (I’m driving to do so, so gas money only - but yeah, I have a truck so gas hog!) I'm not including food/hotel expenses or including the my own time for training. Obviously project birds demand a lot of time, especially initially, as I first work with them and that is time that takes away from my own birds, consultations and opportunity costs.
Thank you to my clients, Patrons and my subscribers here on YouTube for constantly pushing me and helping me - it was a client who made me create a Patreon account and it was a subscriber who pushed me to monetize my channel, and it’s everyone who is pushing me to take on more project birds and find a way to make it financially possible to help more birds. I appreciate you all so very much whether you watch my videos without ever commenting, or you take part by sharing, commenting and giving a thumbs up. I love those of you who go the extra mile and give me feedback in my community tab. I love being able to get my inspiration from all of you and help birds in the process of doing so. There’s so many important messages I want to spread in appreciation of my project birds.
Here is what some of my project birds have taught me:
Rasta: Face your fears.
Morgan: Even if others give up on you, never give up on yourself.
Storm: It’s never too late.
ChiChi: Don’t forget to play.
