Booking agents will approach promoters to see if the promoter wants to put on a show featuring an artist. The promoter will examine the costs involved in putting on the concert and the profit potential. Costs include supplying sound, lights, and the stage, marketing and publicity, and the price of printing the tickets.
The booking agent may well have a figure in mind for the performance (called ‘the guarantee’), and it is up to the promoter to work out whether she can afford to pay that guaranteed amount and still make a profit. The ticket price, multiplied by the number of tickets that can be sold, less the costs for staging the concert, gives the profit.
