Every year, as January 26 approaches, indigenous Australians brace for the inevitable discussion about changing the date of Australia Day. And every year, they are forced to defend the truth of what occurred following the arrival of the First Fleet on January 26, 1788. In this episode of Paint It Blak, Emma explains how that pivotal arrival, on January 26, also triggered the start of atrocities committed against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who were murdered, raped and oppressed, and how celebrating the Nation on this date feels like it’s also a celebration of the Stolen Generations, of segregation, of control over Aboriginal people and breaches of basic human rights.

In this passionate video, Emma says she feels exhausted having to continually explain why this date is not one to celebrate, but to mourn. She also unpacks the biggest lie everyone is told about Australia Day and its declaration as ‘terra nullius’ and calls out authorities trying to please both sides of the debate.

Prior to commencing a career in academia, Emma practised as a solicitor in planning and environment law at a top-tier law firm in Perth.
