Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal’s love story started in 1956 in Calcutta, where they met while working in theatre. Shashi was just 18, while Jennifer, already an established actress in her father’s theatre group, was 22. Despite their age difference and cultural backgrounds, Shashi was immediately drawn to Jennifer and knew he wanted to marry her. However, their families were not supportive—Shashi’s parents were hesitant about him marrying a foreigner, and Jennifer’s father disapproved of the relationship. But the couple was determined to be together and left Jennifer’s father’s theatre group to start a new life, facing many financial struggles along the way.
Jennifer’s sister played a key role in helping the couple when their father opposed the match, and in Shashi’s family, his sister-in-law Geeta Bali and brother Shammi helped them gain acceptance. After two years of proving their commitment, Shashi and Jennifer married in 1958. The early years of their marriage were challenging as Shashi struggled to establish his acting career in Bollywood. They faced financial difficulties, even having to sell their car and other valuables, but their love for each other remained strong. Shashi’s big break came with the film Jab Jab Phool Khile in 1965, which turned his career around. As his success grew, the couple co-founded Prithvi Theatre in 1978 to honour Shashi’s father, Prithviraj Kapoor, and to preserve his theatre legacy.
Sadly, Jennifer was diagnosed with colon cancer in the early 1980s and passed away in 1984, leaving Shashi heartbroken. Her death was a huge blow to him, and he never fully recovered from the loss. Shashi threw himself into work but eventually withdrew from public life, deeply affected by her absence. He remained devoted to Jennifer’s memory, choosing never to remarry and always carrying her photograph with him. Their love story, filled with both joys and sorrows, is one of Bollywood’s most touching love stories.
