In the world of Indian music, few stories are as powerful as that of the Mangeshkar sisters: Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Born into a family where music was survival, their lives changed forever after their father’s sudden death in 1942. Both were forced to step into playback singing at a very young age. Lata, as the eldest, shouldering the burden of the entire family, while little Asha walked in her footsteps. Their bond was so strong that Lata would take Asha along to school, and when the teachers objected, she even quit her own studies.
But life took a painful turn in 1949, when 16-year-old Asha eloped with Lata’s 31-year-old secretary, Ganpatrao Bhosle. The marriage strained her relationship with Lata for years. After the birth of her son, Asha’s family accepted her, but her husband refused. In 1960, she was thrown out of her home with three young children, forced to rebuild her life from scratch through music.
Her turning point came when music director O.P. Nayyar gave her a big break. Around this time, the industry buzzed with rumours accusing Lata of monopolising playback singing and keeping Asha away. Asha, however, carved out her own identity… bold, versatile, and experimental while Lata remained the queen of soulful and classical melodies. “People tried to create trouble between us,” Asha later said, “but blood is thicker than water.”
The 1997 film Saaz dramatised them as bitter rivals, but Asha dismissed it: “Turning incidents into a 3-hour film is just a waste of time.” In truth, the sisters often came together for unforgettable duets like Main Chali Main Chali and Chhap Tilak Sab. Lata herself admitted that Asha could sing daring RD Burman compositions that even she could never attempt.
When Lata passed away in 2022, Asha remembered her not just as a sister, but as a mother-figure and a guru. Their story is one of love, struggle, art, and an unbreakable bond that no rivalry could erase.
