Starting at the National Trust car park next to the New Dungeon Ghyll we start the ascent. This climb follows Stickle Gill which offers us some lovely waterfalls on the way up to keep our interest.
We follow it all the way up to Stickle Tarn where we get our first sight of Jack’s Rake.
We head around the Tarn to the start of Jack’s Rake and begin the grade 1 scramble.

Here we discover why Jack’s Rake didn't make Wainwright's list of "Exciting Situations" as he describes it as “just about the limit that the ordinary common or garden fell walker reasonably may be expected to attempt”. In the back of his final book Wainwright makes a shortlist of 6 exciting situations for walkers to be in aside from summits. Jack's Rake doesn't make the list as he comments that is a place only for men with hair on their chest i.e. too difficult. Either way, it is a renowned ascent and should be attempted with care.

In part 2 we will continue to the summit of Pavey Arc, take the short walk to Thunacar Knott, Pavey Arc’s principal fell, then travel over to Loft Crag, and Pike O Stickle. These fells dominate the skyline as the Langdale Valley is approached from the South.

Once we’ve collected these 4 wainwrights it is a steady downward descent as we work our way to Stake Pass. The pass takes us steadily down to the valley floor and is a good stable route.
When reaching the valley floor, it is a long valley walk to finish down the Mickledon Pass
Where we can reflect on the walk and look upward to Pike o stickle and loft crag which dominate the valley. There is chance to stop at the old dungeon gill for refreshments at the end of the walk

I hope you enjoy it!
