Each being has three 'guna' (tendencies) - in different proportions:
#1 - Sattva Guna is the tendency of balance, harmony, goodness, purity, holistic, constructive, creative, building, positive, peaceful, virtuous.
#2: Rajas Guna is the tendency of passion, activity, neither good nor bad and sometimes either, self-centeredness, egoistic, individualizing, driven, moving, dynamic.
#3: Tamas is the tendency of imbalance, disorder, chaos, anxiety, impure, destructive, delusion, negative, dull or inactive, apathy, inertia or lethargy, violent, vicious, ignorant.
We get happier when the Satva Guna in us accentuates.
There are three ways in which the god exists:
#1: Sat ( = "The god rules everything" i.e. "God pervades everywhere and everything". Tam Guna can recognize only this form of god.)
#2: Chit ("The god exists as a form of energy". Raj Guna realizes only this form)
#3: Anand (= "Happiness" - appreciated only through Satva Guna)
Hence Tam and Raj Guna can't facilitate happiness. For that you need Satva Guna. Satva Guna helps you to calm your mind. That enables the mind to sense energy form of the god in it's purest form - which is happiness.
Just knowing the theory isn't enough. You have to experience 'Soham' - That is me. Or that the energy form is in me. By this Swamiji means we have to meditate - the 'Soham' way - which is to concentrate on your prefrontal cortex and be mindful that the energy which forms the God is also there in me.
What is 'Soham'?
Soham = Saha + Aham
Saha = That is
Aham = Me
Coming back to three Guna's
Tam Guna: Sadness
Raj Guna: un-calm mind
Satva Guna: Happiness
Now how to nurture Satva guna?:
1: "Yukta Aahar Viahar" - Right things consumed through our senses - what we eat, see, hear, talk and do.
2: Meditation (for a couple of hours in a day) and contemplation (Namsmaran - mindfulness of god even while we are working through the day)
3: SatSang: It's important to be with the saints. If not physically, then atleast by reading their literature. Stop being with the wrong kind of people.
