In the birthing chamber, Rhaenyra grips Jace’s hand: “Whatever claim remains to me, you are now its heir. Naught is to be done but by my command.” The words make him a messenger—and a shield. 

Jace carries the order to Daemon. The prince tries to override it—Jace is “needed to patrol the skies on Vermax”—but the boy stands firm on his mother’s command. Daemon only smiles and says he’ll show Jace the meaning of royalty. 

Caraxes looms red against the cliff as Daemon faces two knights. His decree is simple: “Swear anew your oath to Rhaenyra as your queen, and to Prince Jacaerys as the heir to the Iron Throne. If you support the usurper, speak it now and you’ll have a clean and honorable death. But if you choose treachery… know that you will die screaming.” Swords lower; a dragon needs no second speech.
