Hello my Friends, welcome to my Southern Kitchen!

Today’s recipe I am making a Southern Classic Staple, Fried Green Tomatoes! Crispy on the outside, juicy and tender in the inside and is full of flavor and fried to golden perfection! Perfect to serve as an Appetizer or a Side Dish, everyone will love and enjoy these; a perfect Summer snack!!!

What are Green Tomatoes: Unripe Red Tomatoes and you can find them at some grocery stores or at the Farmers Markets.


For the Tomatoes

4 large green tomatoes, rinsed and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon white sugar
1/2 teaspoon white or black pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning


First Coating

1 cup all purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon white or black pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning


Second Coating

1 extra-large egg
1 cup buttermilk
Dashes of hot sauce


Third Coating

1 1/4 cups Italian-Style breadcrumbs
1 cup regular yellow cornmeal

Others

Canola or vegetable oil, for frying
Chopped fresh parsley or chives, for garnish (optional)

Place the tomatoes on a 9x13 inch cookie sheet lined with paper towels. Mix together 2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon each pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Sprinkle tomatoes generously with seasoning mixture and let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes to allow the extra tomato juices to drain out.


Preparing the dipping station: In one pan or bowl, add in the flour and 1 teaspoon each salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning and stir together until well combined. In another pan or bowl, add in the egg, buttermilk, and hot sauce and mix until well blended. In the last pan or bowl, add in the cornmeal and breadcrumbs and mix until well incorporated.


Start by dipping the tomato slices into the flour mixture on both sides and shaking off the excess flour (be sure to get the sides as well). Then lay the slices into the egg and buttermilk mixture until both sides are coated with the mixture and the flour is no longer visible. Then place the tomato slices into the cornmeal and breadcrumb mixture and press to coat both sides evenly. Let the tomatoes sit for about 5 minutes to allow the coating to set.

In a cast iron skillet or regular large skillet or you can deep fry them using a large pot of deep fryer. add the oil and heated until hot about 350 degrees (you can use a thermometer or do a test using a breadcrumb first to make sure the oil is at the right temperature, the breadcrumb should begin to fry evenly immediately when placed in the oil)


Place the tomatoes into the hot oil (do not overcrowd the pan), fry each side until golden brown about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the tomatoes from the oil and place them on a cookie sheet lined with wire racks and paper towels below to absorb the excess oil that drips off. Garnish with chopped parsley or chives. Serve hot and enjoy!


Honey Miracle Dipping Sauce

3/4 cup miracle whip
1 teaspoon honey mustard
Dashes of hot sauce, to taste

In a medium bowl, add in the miracle whip, honey mustard, and hot sauce and mix everything together until well blended.
