Today, on our Czech Republic 4k walk, we will visit the stunning city of Brno - the capital of Moravia! It's always a celebration for me to be here. There are many students in the city, which fills it with the energy of youth.

Brno, with its population of about 400,000 inhabitants and area, is the second largest city in the Czech Republic and the largest Moravian city. It is an administrative center of the South Moravian region and the Czech capital of judicial authority - it is the seat of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court, and the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office. Besides, Brno becomes a new home to many Czech or international students throughout the school year, as there are five universities and nine high schools.
Brno basin has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Still, the town's direct predecessor was a fortified settlement of the Great Moravian Empire known as Staré Zámky, inhabited from the Neolithic Age until the early 11th century. In the early 11th century, Brno was established as a castle of a non-ruling prince from the House of Přemyslid, and Brno became one of the centers of Moravia along with Olomouc and Znojmo. Brno was first mentioned in Cosmas' Chronica Boëmorum, dated 1091, when Bohemian king Vratislav II besieged his brother Conrad at Brno castle.
Brno is also the ideal home base for exploring Central Europe thanks to its position. Most great historical cities, such as Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow, and Munich, are easily reachable by coaches or trains (junction of the N-S and W-E principal routes).
On the one hand, Brno is large enough to offer all the amenities of a major European city. On the other hand, however, it still retains its friendly and intimate atmosphere. It offers rich cultural enjoyment in its numerous museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas, and music clubs.
The city's most visited sights include the Špilberk Castle, fortress, and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on Petrov hill. These two medieval buildings dominate the cityscape and are often depicted as its traditional symbols[citation needed]. The other large preserved castle near the city is Veveří Castle by Brno Reservoir. Another architectural monument of Brno is the functionalist Villa Tugendhat, which was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2001. One of the natural sights nearby is the Moravian Karst. The city is a UNESCO Creative Cities Network member and was designated as a "City of Music" in 2017.
