Beginning the final round three strokes off the lead, Gene Littler carded a 2-under 68 to edge Bob Goalby and 54-hole leader Doug Sanders. Earlier in the year, Littler sustained a rib injury that affected his swing. Fellow pro Ted Kroll informed the 1953 U.S. Amateur champion that it appeared flat, so prior to the U.S. Open, Littler worked on standing more upright, and it resulted in claiming his only major championship title.
