Dick Mayer defeated Cary Middlecoff by seven strokes (72-79) in an 18-hole playoff at Inverness Club to win his only major championship. Mayer, 34, played steady golf as Middlecoff made five bogeys and two double bogeys. One day earlier, Mayer had birdied the 72nd hole to foil Jimmy Demaret, 47, who was seeking to become the oldest U.S. Open champion. Playing an hour behind Mayer, Middlecoff shot rounds of 68-68 on Saturday and birdied his final hole to force the playoff.
