Hello MOTHERWORT: The gift of CALM (New Video Lesson)

Motherwort can support us during anxiety, offering the gift of calm. This healing wildflower speaks to the heart and uterus. It can calm a racing heart; lower blood pressure; and also offer support for the female reproductive system.

Join me in the field and learn to identify and harvest Motherwort in flower! Learn all about this powerful wild medicinal of the Lamiaceae family.

Motherwort is a perennial, scientifically called Leonurus cardiaca. I loosely translate this to Lion’s Heart! And I interpret it to mean: motherwort gives us courage. Note Leonurus means “lion’s tail”; cardiaca: “of the heart”.

Its common name speaks to its worthiness for mamas, or folks who have wombs. (Wort = worth). However, it is equally useful for anyone for calming and cooling down the nervous system and toning the cardiovascular system.

Therapeutic Qualities:
Heart tonic, emmenagogue, hypotensive, relaxant.

Uses:
Nervousness, heart palpitations, female reproductive support (cramps, PMS, menopause, menstrual support), high blood pressure, tachycardia, hyperthyroid.

Potential Contraindications:
Motherwort is contraindicated during pregnancy, except in the last stages. Please research any new food or medicine, go slowly, learn, and discuss using it with your healthcare provider.

Habitat:
Look for it in fields, meadows, woodland edges, river banks and anthropogenic sites; in rich, moist well drained soil in part shade to full sun. Hardiness Zones (USDA): 3–8. Can become weedy / invasive, so good to keep it in check as your needs and environs dictate. Native of Europe. Now grows throughout many parts of the world—throughout the US and Europe.
