Motherwort Stripping: Basic Technique for Making Potent Remedies    • Motherwort Stripping: Basic Technique...

Meet MOTHERWORT in Leaf. Become an excellent plant detective and don't accidentally weed out This Gift of Calm.

I love tracking plants from sprout to seed. And it is one of the skills that makes us excellent forager.

Today we focus on motherwort in leaf, so you know how to identify this important herbal remedy—the gift of calm— in all its life stages. This is important so you don’t accidentally weed it out. Or so you can flag its location and return for its flowering tops in late spring.

This is not when you would be making its medicine; that would be in late spring and summer (please see our other 2 motherwort videos for that). But I don’t want you to miss this plant; since it’s one of the stellar herbal medicines we have, and it may be growing outside your door or in your neighborhood right now.

Therapeutic Uses
Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is used for calming a racing heart; anxiety; high blood pressure; menstrual issues such as PMS and cramping; menopausal issues; and hyperthyroid. It is a relaxing cardiac and uterine tonic.

Contraindications: Do not use in pregnancy as it is emmenagogic, aka blood moving, except at the end stages with medical supervision. Research any new herb & discuss using it with your healthcare provider.

Where are you going to find it?
This hardy perennial of the Lamiaceae family is a Native of Europe. It now grows throughout the USA and many parts of the world.

Habitat
Look for it in meadows, woodland edges, river banks, anthropogenic sites. Rich, moist, well drained soil in part shade to full sun. Hardiness Zones (USDA): 3–8.

If you choose to plant this herbal ally (which I recommend), please note that it can become weedy / invasive, so it is good to keep it in check as your needs and environs dictate.
