The Tswana people are a Bantu-speaking ethnic group who are native to Southern Africa. They speak the Tswana language called Setswana, which is a member of the Sotho-Tswana language group, belonging to the Bantu language family group. About 85% of the  Botswana population comprises the Tswana people, however, there are more Tswana speakers in South Africa, with over 3.5 million people speaking the language.
The Tswana tribe is popular for its dance, the unique names, and gorgeous wedding dresses. Their chiefdoms, back in the days, were more structured than those of neighboring communities. Not only did they have a complex legal system, but also had a hierarchy of courts and mediators. There were also harsh punishments for people found guilty of crimes.Tswana villages were divided into wards that were occupied by members of various  patrilineal descent groups. The village chieftaincy was a hereditary position, and the chiefs appointed ward leaders whose homes were clustered around the chief's compound. The Tswana people have a custom of initiating their children into adulthood. There was usually an elaborate ceremony after the initiation which lasted a few months. This ceremony came after girls and boys were taken to separate parts of a bush in the winter for the initiation process. Only the boys got circumcised during the initiation.
