This is a Disney movie. Written by Ray Bradbury. There may or may not be a functioning guillotine in this movie. And it's awesome.

Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones, Glengarry Glen Ross) kills it in this movie. He's great in everything but this is my favorite role of his. Jason Robards (Magnolia, The Ballad of Cable Hogue) plays opposite him as a father who had children late in life and is confronted with the realities of what that means as he ages. It's an interesting mix of nuanced drama and over-the-top fantasy horror.

Good Halloween watch for the whole family! At the end of the day, it really is a kids movie. It doesn't pander and I think kids actually appreciate that. It's essentially Ray Bradbury's spin on the classic tale of Faust and has some strong moral lessons even though there's a little blood and a lot of spiders. I saw this when I was like 5 and it was scary but it didn't ruin my life, I'd actually forgotten most of the gorier stuff by the time I re-watched.

The music for this is composed by Cliff Martinez and is taken from Nicolas Winding Refn's "Too Old To Die Young" (which is not a Disney production, but you can watch it on Amazon. It's pure Refn and I love it but it's pretty disturbing and not for everyone).
