प्रागैतिहासिक काल
ऐसी कल जिसकी कोई लिखित साक्ष्य प्राप्त नहीं हुए हैं तथा उस समय मानव की सभ्यता प्रारंभिक रूप में थी उस काल को प्रागैतिहासिक काल कहा जाता है। प्रागैतिहासिक शब्द मानव इतिहास की उस अवधि के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है जिसमें लेखन की व्यवस्था नहीं थी इसके अनुसार आदिकालीन समाज के काल को पूर्व इतिहास काल कहते हैं।

इस काल में लोगों को लेखन की जानकारी नहीं थी, अतः इस समाज की जानकारी किसी लिखित अभिलेख के आधार पर नहीं, बल्कि पुरातत्त्व की सहायता, शैलचित्र, औजार व अन्य शिल्प के आधार पर प्राप्त की जाती है।
आदिमानव के पास जीवन-यापन के बहुत कम साधन थे।
धीरे-धीरे मानव मस्तिष्क का विकास हुआ और वह अपने ज्ञान को बढ़ाने लगा।
प्रकृति ने उसे जो साधन दिए थे, उसने उनका उपयोग ठीक से करना आरम्भ कर दिया। इस स्थिति में पहुँचने के लिए उसे काफी लम्बा समय लग गया।
इस दौरान अपने पत्थरों को नुकीला कर औजार और हथियार बनाना सीख लिया।
वनों से आच्छादित छत्तीसगढ़ के पर्वत और चट्टानों पर प्राचीन काल को विभिन्न कला के रूप आज भी कहीं-कहीं दिखाई पड़ते हैं।
शैलचित्र प्राचीन मानवीय सभ्यता के विकास को प्रारम्भिक रूप से स्पष्ट करते है।
शैलचित्र मानव मन के विचारों को व्यक्त करने के माध्यम थे। इससे पता चलता है कि उन्हें चित्रकला का प्रारम्भिक ज्ञान था।
